Weekly Bulletin

Remember
Nehemiah 13:31

Last Sunday evening was a wonderful evening in our small groups. Each of the four groups discussed the same topic: prayer. If you were not able to be a part of a small group, don’t miss the next one.
Prayer is a special privilege afforded to Christians. Prayer encourages us to lay ourselves bare before God. It lends itself to honesty as we approach the throne of God. However, there are occasions that we find ourselves prone to self-deception.
There is a powerful statement made by Nehemiah in the book bearing his name. “Remember me with favor, O my God.” It may sound like Nehemiah is anxious about losing his reward. Nehemiah has led the Israelites to great accomplishments, rebuilding the city wall, restoring the gates of the city. He has brought the nation together. It would be easy for him to deceive himself into thinking, “Look at what I have done.”
David utters the same kind of prayer in Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart;” That is a great, honest prayer. It is in essence saying, “Lord, often I think that I am doing fine. But you may see some things that are terribly wrong. Please show them to me so that I can correct the error.”
I believe that both prayers are expressing the same thought. It is a great prayer for all of us. We need to approach the throne of God with receptive hearts, and a desire to yield to God’s leading.
