So Bored
So Bored
Life can be so very exciting, at least most of the time. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for that excitement to give way to boredom. (Preachers pray that boredom is not experienced during the sermon). We all have our toys, movies, music and/or hobbies to absorb our time and energy to ward off the blahs of boredom, but there come occasions when nothing that we have is adequate to occupy our interest. We end up being bored.
What do you do when you get bored? Maybe you find yourself “chilling out” in front of the television. Maybe it is playing some mindless game on the computer. I found out that there is a website called “boredom busters” that will take you to all sorts of games, activities, video clips, jokes and other fun things to do.
Consider the book of Ecclesiastes. “Vanity of vanities” seems to be his theme. Those are the words of a man in search of meaning for his life. In his search for meaning he investigates several remedies, including self-indulgence. He finds momentary gratification, but he also realizes that such is all there is. He finally comes to some conclusions: go about your business, appreciate your family, value wisdom and learning, and “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, "I find no pleasure in them". In other words, start with God, because that is the foundation of meaning.
Numerous individuals in our society find themselves bored, or at least unhappy, with their employment. Their work is done simply done mechanically. It was interesting to read an article (in a doctors office waiting room) that stated that if you are working at a job where you enjoy 65% of what you do, you have a great job. That would mean that probably 35% of your job is necessary routine, so you do those parts diligently so that you can enjoy the rest.
I wonder what Solomon would have written where he, when boredom began to settle in, occupied his time helping others. It has been documented that those who find an outlet for their lives that involve caring for others discover that whatever else life is, it isn’t boring. As we trust God and go faithfully about our daily tasks and help others, God goes with us, adding the pleasure of His presence to our lives. Then boredom becomes a thing of the past.
