Doing Our Job

...Doing Our Job...

Each week I try to find some inspiration to write something that is going to b e helpful during the coming week. Today I find myself still waiting for that inspiration. However, the bulletin goes to press in the morning, so I need to write something.
I have noticed that the baseball playoffs are absorbing much of the television broadcast time. I did watch the Red Sox soundly defeat Cleveland last night (Thursday).
Are you ready for the beginning of the World Series? The Colorado Rockies will be playing in the World Series for the first time in history. At the time of this writing, their opponent is yet to be determined. It does seem odd that this phenomenon called “Baseball Fever” strikes ordinarily normal people. Why do we get excited about watching a game that is taking place all the way across the United States, by people we have never met, whose job is to hit a ball with a stick, and make more money in one game that most people make in a year? Why do 50,000 people get all excited about cheering people who are simply doing their job?

In the meantime, a woman who has been deserted by her husband continues to work two jobs just try to make ends meet so that her children can be “somewhat” comfortable, and no one notices. A husband and wife find themselves victims of “downsizing” and are now depending on unemployment and food stamps, and no one cheers their attitude, or resourcefulness? Does anyone cheer when we take care of our families, greet someone who is lonely, or just simply do our job well? People are doing things all the time that are more important than catching or hitting a ball.
I believe that each time we give of ourselves and wealth to help others, when we serve others or do our job with integrity or call someone who is hurting, that God sees with approval. I believe that because we represent God in this world. I believe that in a very real sense our actions show that we are temporary residents of this world, and that we are anticipating a better existence. When someone steps up to the plate that God nods in approval. But the best is that we fail to perform our best, we are not cut from the team.
Do you recall the words of Jesus about doing “little things?” Mark 9:41-42, ‘I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.’ Jesus also said that doing for others was tantamount to doing for Him. “'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”
Find someone this week who could use a few words of encouragement………Dennis
