The Real Thing
The Real Thing
I have been told that those who work in banks have learned how to recognize counterfeit money by knowing what is genuine. I suppose that as long as there has been the genuine, there has been counterfeit.
It has become quite normal to the cashier at any given retail business to inspect your money to see if it is real. It seems that any denomination of money over a $5.00 bill is held up to the light and examined. One establishment had a sort of blue light they placed my money under to insure that the money was genuine.
In jest I commented to the man with me that the little blue light might be helpful in churches. Upon entering the church building, everyone would have to pass under the blue light. If nothing happened, you would be free to enter. If an alarm went off, you would have to agree to view the Jules Miller Film Strip (or something of like nature).
I then remembered a passage of scripture in I John 4:1 that reads, “. . . test the spirits to see whether they are from God,”. False teachers were in abundance in the first century. They are still in abundance and there is a very real need to be able to identify them. That is why John says to test the spirits.
John also says in 2 John 8 to “Watch yourself…” Make sure that the progress that you have made in your relationship with God is not tossed away by a moment of inattentiveness. How do we do that?
It is a matter of light. We must hold ourselves up to the light. Not a light bulb or some fuzzy looking blue light, but to the light of Jesus Christ. He is my standard by which I must measure myself. He is your standard as well.
Dennis
Thank you to those who worked so hard to make yesterday’s picnic a success. The food-fellowship and fun (and weather) were great. We appreciate all the hard work.
