Remember When?
Remember When?
It seems that every generation of our great country has been witness to some product that has failed to live up to all the hype.
In 1985 Coca Cola introduced a product called “New Coke”. It took only two months for that product to vanish from the grocery store shelves. People clamored for the classic flavor.
The Betamax was a videotape format developed by Sony that provided nice clean images. However, it was only able to record for 1 hour. It was very soon that VHS came along and sent Betamax into obscurity.
The mother of all product failures (my opinion) was introduced in 1957. It is a product that evokes a sense of failure at the very mention of its name. Ford Motor Company introduced this failure, the Edsel. September 4 will be the 50th anniversary of the introduction of this car. The Edsel lasted for two more model years after it’s introduction and then vanished among the scrap heap of automotive history.
Human history is replete with other kinds of Edsels, times when people did not see that their hopes and dreams were misplaced, and ambitions outstripped the reality of the circumstances.
Biblically speaking, Israel’s pursuit of other gods is a prime example. There was a lot of hype to become just like their neighbors. They invested their lives and worshipped accordingly. Jeremiah continued to warn them of the doom that was to come, but they would not listen. Jeremiah continued to focus his messages on their history of apostasy.
Despite all the warnings and urging, Israel refused to listen, and followed after their own design of a nation. Edsel’s disaster had a temporary effect of the company’s bottom line, but Israel’s failure to listen to the prophets would have a devastating effect for generations to come.
It is up to you and I to follow God’s plan for people. Some of the lessons we learn is that we need to stay true to God, not manufacturing something that is only going to meet our own self-serving lives. We need to nurture our relationship with God through prayer and worship.
