Hi-Tech Hatred

Hi-Tech Hatred

One of the most bizarre news story that I have ever read was the story about former astronaut Lisa Nowak who drove some 950 miles to confront her romantic rival. She was apparently involved in some sort of love triangle. It was reported that she was allegedly so incensed and filled with hatred that she wore a diaper during her travel so that she would not have to stop for bathroom breaks. Strange indeed. (Google News)
Friday’s Santa Maria Times reported a story of two men who were involved in an internet fight. The internet combatant in Virginia became so enraged that he drove 1300 miles and burned his rival’s trailer home to the ground. Also strange indeed. (Santa Maria Times, July 27, 2007)
There is certainly no room among God’s people for this kind of hatred. When Jesus found Himself in the middle of a somewhat heated controversy in Jerusalem, He offered an extremely simple response to a tricky question. The answer quieted the voices of those who were trying to play games with Him.
“Which commandment is the greatest?” asked one of the men. The response of Jesus was, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Instead of Hi-Tech hatred, Jesus offers low-tech love.
Hatred is not so difficult, but to love others is an enormous challenge. Jesus calls us to love those who are unlovable, unloving, and who don’t want your love. “If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matt 5:46-48)
To love one’s neighbor is to love Jesus Christ. Nothing more, nothing less. In a world of Hi-Tech hatred this is the only way to live.
