DAY TO REMEMBER

June 6, 1944

The dark cloud of Nazi Germany plagued Europe. All hope of liberation was lost. But then allied forces began their assault on the beaches of Normandy. United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt invited the nation to pray with him.

In his prayer, the President asked for a rededication of this country’s faith in Him (God), that this country would devote ourselves to continued prayer. He prayed for the troops as well. You can hear the content of that prayer on your computer at http://www.afa.net/.

As I sit at my desk writing this article, it is June 6, 2007. This is the 63rd anniversary of D-Day. It was on this day that an armada crossed a narrow strip of sea from England to Normandy, France and greatly weakened the grip of Nazi Germany. I suppose that nothing has made this event more vivid to the general population today than the movie “Saving Private Ryan.” This war was (in the words of President Roosevelt) not to gain conquest, but to free from conquest.

Thanks to Mel Gibson, the vivid reality of the cross of Jesus Christ has been brought into homes across our country via video projection. We will do well to remember that the cross is not simply about the passion of the Christ (important as it is). The cross of Christ is more about the God/man relationship.

We ought to never forget the sacrifice that was made for freedom in this world. At the risk of losing it’s significance, I must reference the old adage that “Freedom is never free.”

Last Sunday morning we had a wonderful worship service. The songs, prayers and scripture all combined to bring us into the presence of God. Then again, maybe it was not so much all that as it was the spirit of each person assembled together. Jesus Christ died so that we could rejoice in freedom, freedom from sin.

Think on these things……..Dennis

THANK YOU FOR DONATIONS

Last Sunday's Day of Prayer and Fasting netted $841.58 for the poor and sick in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. This will go to the effort of churches of Christ to assist our missionary and medical efforts in those countries as they administer to the needy.
Also, the donation for "One Shining Day" of $145 was sent to join a national effort of the church to help those in need in Africa's poorest regions and spread the gospel along with it.

CORE SONGS FOR FOSTER ROAD
It has come to our attention that some may not know that well some of the songs we sing Sunday morning. To improve our singing and worship in song we will be singing these songs this month more than
usual so we can all know them better. Others will be added in coming months. If you want to take a book to practice at home please be sure to bring it back at the next worship so we are not short of
songbooks. Meditate on the words and praise God as you sing.
Song numbers are 508, 129, 469, 538, 76 and 38, 18, 96, 97, 103.
