Why Go To Church Services?

A neighbor of mine bought a new car. As a good neighbor would, I went over to his house to congratulate him on such a wonderful choice of automobile. When I walked into his garage and announced my presence, Glen said, “Hey Dennis. Come here and look at what a terrible job they did putting my car together.” Sure enough, neither of the doors fit properly, nor did the hood or the trunk lid. In other words, everything that had a hinge did not fit well. He finally convinced the dealer to give him another car. Glen was not satisfied to live with the flaws.

It is common for a family to buy a house and find some things that are flawed. But they continue to live in the house while attempting (and sometimes succeeding) to fix the flaws.

It is possible that you had a bad experience at church when you were growing up. There may have been those whom you would define as “Sunday Only” Christians. Maybe you become somewhat confused when the preacher begins referring to places in the Bible that you have never heard before. Maybe giving up Sunday morning sleep time is just so very difficult.

The prophet Ezekiel was a man greatly blessed. His prophecies were made in a time that Israel had been removed from their homeland and the temple, where God dwelt. God blesses Ezekiel with a vision of the new Temple that would be when Israel returned to Canaan. In the book bearing the prophets’ name, chapter 43:1-5, we find an account of this vision. In verse 5 we read, “Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple.”

Why go to church services? Admittedly, churches, like automobiles and houses and people, have flaws. But if we are looking at the flaws, we are missing a glorious moment. I would suggest that the glory of God fills a gathering of God’s people that is just not possible to be realized individually. When we open our spiritual eyes, we will indeed see His glory. The best place to see it is at church.
