Looking For Jesus

It was Palm Sunday and, because of illness, the family’s 5-year-old son had to stay home from church with a baby-sitter. When the family returned home carrying palm branches, he asked what they were for.
His mother gently explained. "Well honey, people held them over Jesus’ head as he walked by,"
The boy suddenly got upset, folded his arms and sat down in a kitchen chair, "Wouldn’t you know it," he said, "the one Sunday I don’t go, He showed up!"

It is a great delight to be able to visit with friends each Sunday at church. In fact, we expect to see our friends. That is a good thing. We often become saddened when friends are not there.

The one that we should expect to see at each assembly is Jesus. Actually, if we don’t see Jesus, it is probably because we are not looking for Him. Jesus told us in Matthew 18:20 reads, “For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."

We can develop a “want to” attitude toward church attendance by learning to appreciate what Jesus has done for us. He has changed our relationship with God forever. Through Him, we now have access to the Father.

Secondly, we need to appreciate what stands to be lost. Missing out on the fellowship with one another would be rather discouraging. To miss out on salvation would be even worse. The joining together with one another is one safeguard against being lost.

It is a new year. Let us resolve to make greater effort this year to make a difference. Let’s resolve that the next time we come to church services, expect to see Jesus.

On Monday, January 15, Jerry Rushford from Pepperdine will be speaking at a luncheon meeting here at Foster Road. We will be meeting at 11:30 on January 15 in the Family Center. Jerry has done a great deal of research on many of the songs that we sing, and on January 15 his topic will be, “Rediscovering the Power Of Forgotten Hymns.” Everyone is invited to attend. Jerry will also have opportunity to obtain some information about the Pepperdine Lectures scheduled for later this year.
