HANDS FREE OPERATION

I have taken one more step into the age of technology. I went to an after Christmas sale and purchased a “Blue Tooth” earpiece for my cellular phone. This allows me to talk on the telephone while driving down the road and still be able to keep both hands on the steering wheel. Now I need to figure out how to use voice commands for the phone so that I will not become distracted by having to look at the keypad when dialing.

Brooklyn, Ohio was the first city in the nation to require the use of seat belts. They are also the very first to ban hand held cell phones. A General Motors survey indicated 70% of cell phone calls are made from cars. Increasing data indicates that in the crucial split second when eyes go to the dial-pad, or a hand is on the phone, drivers get into accidents, some of which are fatal. Distracted driving is dangerous.

I wonder if the prophet Habakkuk was thinking that God had become distracted. In Habakkuk 1:2 we read the prophet’s words: “O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not listen?” He believes that things are out of control. He is disgusted at the culture of violence and the destruction. The law is weak and there is no justice. The wicked seem to be doing much better than the righteous. All that tied together would seem to indicate that someone is not paying attention.

In chapter two of this same book, God answers Habakkuk. “Record the vision and inscribe it on tablets, that the one who reads it may run. For the vision is yet for the appointed time; it hastens toward the goal, and it will not fail. Though it tarries, wait for it; for it will certainly come, it will not delay.”

God is often slow, as we measure time, but He is never late. The message is loud and clear: God will surely act to re-establish justice. God has not become distracted by some other activity. The prophet’s challenge, and ours, is to wait on the Lord.

If, in your own life, Gods’ involvement seems to be delayed, it is not because He is busy multi-tasking and just cannot get to it; it is because the time is not right. “Though it tarries, wait for it; for it will certainly come, it will not delay.” ….Dennis

RYAN CARROLL was baptized last Wednesday. Ryan, who now attends school in Berkely, and his brother, Chris, grew up here at Foster Road and we are so happy that Ryan made this decision.

TOMORROW - January 15, Jerry Rushford from Pepperdine will be speaking at a luncheon meeting here at Foster Road. We will be meeting at 11:30 on January 15 in the Family Center. Jerry has done a great deal of research on many of the songs that we sing, and on January 15 his topic will be, “Rediscovering the Power Of Forgotten Hymns.” Everyone is invited to attend. Jerry will also have opportunity to obtain some information about the Pepperdine Lectures scheduled for later this year.
