Show me Jesus
In November of 2004, a man was cooking some fish sticks. He burnt them and found, with the help of his son, the face of Jesus. A year later he sold that fish stick on e-bay. A woman in
I don’t know what you think about these modern day revelations, but they seem to point to a yearning in our culture to find Christ in everyday, ordinary things. The problem with all this is that it sure poses a danger to our faith. How do you lift up a God worthy of praise and thanksgiving when you have just found Him on a burnt fish stick? How does my faith and praise for a transcendent God remain real when He has become not much more than a commodity on e-bay?
Psalm 100 urges us to prepare for the coming of the Lord by calling us back to worship, thanksgiving and praise. There is not a hint that we should look for iconic representations of deity in fish sticks or oil spills or a decade old grilled cheese sandwich. This psalm tells us that we should praise God for 4 reasons: 1) Because God made us; 2) Because God loves us; 3) Because we belong to God, and; 4) because God is all around us.
If we really long to see Jesus, we need only to look around us. We should be able to see Christ in the lives of others, but they should also be able to see Christ in us. Don’t be looking for God in the drumstick of the Thanksgiving turkey. Let people find God living in you.
