Inside of Bulletin for August 27th 2006
When at First –
I saw a picture yesterday of a young baseball player consoling one of his teammates after having lost to a team from
I want to introduce you to a man who the scripture tells us experienced failure. The name of the man is John Mark. He had joined Paul and Barnabas on Paul’s first missionary journey. When the missionary team got to Pamphylia, John Mark returned to his home. He did not complete the missionary journey. Later, when Paul was preparing to set out again, Barnabas wanted to take John Mark with them. Paul resisted that proposal because of John’s previous desertion. The disagreement was such that Paul and Barnabas parted company.
If I had been John Mark, I would have felt very conspicuous and conscious of my previous action. I believe that I would have been grieved over the fact that I had become a source of contention to others. (continued next column)
Every fall, the leaves on our trees (and the neighbors tree) fall to the ground. The trees look as though there is no life left in them at all. But that is not the end of the story. Every spring, new leaves begin to sprout, and before long, those trees are as beautiful as they were last year.
John’s failure on that missionary journey was not the end of the story. And failures that you have experienced are not the end of the story. Next week, we will look at some of John Mark’s successes.
